Entrepreneurship: Belief, Courage, Commitment, Knowledge, Passion, Failure, Failure, Failure … and Success!
Just a few weeks ago I had the unique privilege of being awarded a fully-funded place at the Think Young Entrepreneurial Summer School in Brussels, thanks to SETsquared.
Days after submitting my application without any idea whether I was going to be selected or not, all of a sudden I received an email from SETSquared congratulating me on winning the award. From that moment I saw the light at the end of the tunnel and in no time I found myself in Brussels more inspired than ever to attend the school and learn as much as I could from it.
The full program lasted one week and it was one intensive week. From day one, I met nearly 100 young and bright entrepreneurs all of whom shared the same vision, passion and commitment regardless of their field of work and from that day onwards I was in my element.
From 9am to 6pm it was intense, including long sessions, Q&A and debates with a variety of entrepreneurs finishing with 30-minute cocktail breaks to rest and recharge our batteries. At the end of each day, groups had to give a 5-minute presentation reporting daily outcomes, give feedback and suggestions etc.
We visited the European Parliament and engaged in a debate regarding the views, expectations and the future of entrepreneurship in Europe. In addition, we also visited Google HQ where we’ve had a networking cocktail event with the staff about Google’s views on and support for young entrepreneurs of today.
Can you imagine? All of a sudden I was in an intensive environment with a taste of fun, entertainment, self-driven passion, respect, the “wow factor” and supporting all this was the strong and solid multi-cultural background from all the individuals presented. Even just the candidates, there were 100 of us and within that there were 30 different nationalities, people from all over the word presenting, working together, sharing discussions, pitching ideas, I was completely blown away with the tremendous “networking spirit” I’ve seen there. Young people who had similar business ideas were already exchanging contacts for future business relationships and so forth, for all this I had two words only – it was inspirational and remarkable.
So, by this time you’re probably saying hmmm okay, what a great story, I feel inclined to engage more with SETSquared and Summer Schools across Europe and in the World.
Now the best part comes after 6pm, after “working hard” what else better than “partying hard”, the perfect combination.
In a single group or sometimes divided into groups of 20-30 people we explored Brussels down to the very last corner from the EU parliament to Brussels water canal, Grand Place to museums, bars, clubs, even festivals, churches, parks and so much more that made my one week + 100 people feel like a life-time for me. Many of the people I’ve met confessed that the real networking part was the quality time we spent together, it really felt like we’ve know each others far more than just a week.
So what have I learned from all this? What it worth it? Will I do it again? Can I recommend another person to it?
For all this endless questions the answers is YES, YES and YES. I’ve spent a remarkable week, where I‘ve learned so much, met so many people that I would never normally meet not even in 6 months, engaged in many debates, sessions, workshops, so many things all at the same time and all that in just a week! This was truly an unforgettable experience, which I highly recommend to anyone who has an open mind and is ready to embrace the world, help change and make it a better place to live for all of us.
So what’s Entrepreneurship: A place for dreamers, visionaries, engineers, artists ..., frankly there isn’t a single way to describe this word or what goes on in the mind on an entrepreneur.
What qualities uniquely distinguishes “good” entrepreneurs and “the exceptional ones”, the ones who don’t just make it to the top but due to their vision, belief and commitment change their entire industry and even the world always raising the bar.
I’ve decide to end this blog with one of the few quotes that have inspired and guided me into pursue my dream.
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.” Steve Jobs,
Success is the ability to go from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm” Winston Churchill
“Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans” John Lennon
“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Thomas Edison
“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. Thomas Edison
“You’re never too late to be what you could have been”
I hope that by the time you finish reading this blog, you’ll reflect and think how you can make a difference in your community, city, as an entrepreneur, or normal employee, it doesn’t matter as long as you do something that you love and it’s good for the world.
“You only live once, but if you do it right, Once is all you need!” Flack Ribeiro.
